Why Is My Port Closed After Forwarding?

troubleshooting a port that is closed after forwarding

Why is my Port Closed After Forwarding?

A port can be closed after port forwarding due to having multiple routers connected, configuring the incorrect IP address or because the firewall settings are blocking the port.

  • Multiple routers are connected
When multiple routers are connected, you will need to send all incoming signals from router 1 to router 2. Define the port forwarding rules in router 2.
  • Incorrect IP address
Having the incorrect IP address in the port forwarding rule can cause a closed port. The IP address must direct towards the PC or computer, to which you want to send the connection.
  • Router’s Firewall settings
Some firewall rules do not allow open connections, although you might have set all the rules correctly. In this case, you can either turn off the firewall entirely or reduce the settings to the minimum security setting.

Why is port 80 still closed after forwarding?

Port 80 can still be closed after forwarding because of incorrect router configuration, having multiple routers on the same network, or because the ISP has blocked the port.

Some reasons why port 80 is closed after forwarding:

  • Website for Port checking is down– every transmission needs an external website to check whether the port 80 is opened or not. If the website to check the port is down, you won’t be able to check the status of the port.
  • Router Configuration– if your router is UPnP/NAT-PMP compatible, then kindly ensure that UPnP/NAT-PMP is turned on and enabled while the DMZ mode is disabled.
  • Multiple devices in the network– in case you have more than one router in your network, then either turn the middle router into a bridge and configure only one router or manually set the forwarding rules for all the routers. Automatic transmission happens only for the router directly connected to the computer.
  • Port blocked by ISP– many times your ISP might have blocked the ports, or have disabled transmission. Check with your ISP and request them to open one for you.

Why is port 25565 still closed after port forwarding?

Port 25565 can be closed after forwarding because of a firewall blocking the port, having the wrong IP address configured, or not being able to connect to local host.

Some reasons why port 25565 is closed after forwarding:

  • Firewall blocking port – the firewall settings prevent any transmission to pass. Configure it properly to allow incoming transmissions to pass.
  • Wrong Configuration – the IP addresses can be incorrectly configured. You need to specify the exact address of the computer.
  • Issues with External IP addresses – check whether you can connect to the server or localhost, if you can connect via internal 192, then it’s an external issue, and you need to get in touch with your ISP.

Port still blocked after port forwarding

How to open a blocked port after forwarding:

  1. Search for your router’s IP address to access the configuration page
    • For Windows – Start >Settings> Network and Internet >View Network Properties >check Default Gateway
    • For Mac – Apple Menu >System Preferences >Network >Advanced >TCP/IP >check the number on the right of ‘Router.’
  1. Open a browser tab, and the address figured out in step 1
  2. Once you have entered the router’s console look for the Port Forwarding section (it can have different names depending on the router) Look for
    1. Port Forward
    2. Gaming
    3. Virtual Servers
    4. Firewall
    5. Advanced Protection

  1. Enter the required information and open your desired port
    • Application Name/Description
    • Service Type – Maybe TCP or UDP type, in case you are not certain to use the both option
    • Start – this is for the inbound, type the range of the ports, start with the lowest number
    • End – type the highest number of your range, in case you are opening multiple ports
  1. It will ask for the private IP address of the PC or device. Make sure to enter this information accurately.
  2. Save and Apply the settings, make sure to restart your router once you have configured the ports.

D-Link port forwarding not working

Port forwarding is an issue with many D-Link models, but the best part about the D-Link routers/modems is that almost all of them have the same user interface and navigation systems.

All the models under the following series

  • DAP
  • DCM
  • DFL
  • DHP
  • DI
  • DIR
  • DSL
  • DVG
  • DWL

Before I tell you the steps, you must know some other important information. Some of the basic components for port forwarding in a D-Link router/model are

  • Available Ports for forwarding
  • IP/Mac address of the destination device
  • TCP or UDP protocols or both as per your need
  • WAN port details

How to fix D-Link Port forward not working

Enter one of the following URL’s in the address bar of your browser

  1. Enter the user name and password (Default: admin)
  2. Go to the Advanced Tab > Fort Forwarding
  3. Click the checkbox beside the rule that you want to enable. For the pre-defined fields, select from the dropdown for the rest enter manually.
  4. Either enter the IP address of the destination computer or device or select the appropriate option from the dropdown for DHCP client options
  5. Click on save and restart your modem and router

TP-Link port forwarding not working

If you have a TP-Link router or modem, then you are already one step closer to implementing port forwarding.

The below steps is for the model TL-WR940N, but it will also work seamlessly for models like TP-link AC1200 and TP-link AC1750.

Follow the below steps:

  1. Setup a static IP address for the computer or the device to which you want to forward. If you don’t do this, then the port might close once you reboot the router.
  2. Launch your browser and go to the TP-Link router’s home page (use the default address – 192.168.1.1)
  3. Now enter the username and password, by default, it is set to admin
  4. From the left side menu, select the Port Forwarding option, and then select the Add New button placed at the center of the screen
  5. Now you need to put in the number of the port where you want to forward the transmission. For Xbox, it can be
  1. TCP – 3074
  2. UDP – 3074
  3. In the IP Address box, enter the IP address of the destination device, post which select the Protocol (TCP, UDP, or both) and then click the Enabled button from the dropdown beside Status.
  4. Click on Save and exit, and now you are ready to go.

Important: The port forwarding feature is not compatible with certain models – the Archer series (TP-Link AC1200, TP-Link AC1750, and other models in this series)
