  • With a standard 1080p HD 65-inch TV, you’ve to maintain a minimum distance of 8 or 8.1 feet from the screen. This can be as far as 13.5 feet. However, with a 4K Ultra HD television, the viewing distance range is lesser and is between 5.4 or 5.5 feet to 8 or 8.1 feet.
  • The recommended mixed usage distance is usually 8.9 feet whilst the recommended cinema distance is 6.5 feet.

The recommended distance varies from brand to brand.

Is a 65 inch TV Too Big?

A viewing distance of less than 8 feet, will make a 65-inch TV with 1080p HD resolution, be too big. A room that allows a distance of 8 to 10 feet is recommended.

One of the basic factors that can help you decide if a 65 inch TV is too big, is the size of your room. If you have a small room, a television of this size may be too big.

To make a decision, you can measure in inches the distance between where you plan to keep the TV and where you would be seated. Doubling this distance can often help to arrive at suitable screen size.

The following are some other factors that can help you analyze if a 65 inch TV is too big for you.

  • A 65-inch TV often cannot be considered too big if you enjoy viewing long shots or watching movies.
  • A 65-inch TV may be too big if you plan to mount it on a cabinet in your room. However, if you’re planning to fit it on the wall, this size shouldn’t be a problem.
  • A 65-inch TV is not too big if you have a room that measures 550cm x 330cm or has bigger measurements.

Is 65 inch TV Too Small?

If your maximum viewing distance is usually more than 14.5 feet, a standard 1080p HD 65-inch TV is too small for you.

A 65-inch TV may be too small if you have a really big room. It may also not be feasible to have a television of this size if you sit too close to the set.

The following factors can help to determine if a 65 inch TV is too small for you.

  • For 4K TVs, you may find that a 65 inch TV is too small if this viewing distance is more than 8 feet.
  • A 65-inch TV is not too small if you plan to use it along with a 110” screen and a projector.
  • A TV of 65 inches size is not too small for those who want a fairly big television at a reasonable price.

How to Mount 65-inch TV

The mounting of a flat television depends on the size of the TV, eye-level from the floor, reclining sitting angle and viewing distance from the television.

The choice of mounting bolts is equally important. For example, a Samsung 65-inch TV supports the use of M8 bolts.

The following points are worth considering when you’re trying to decide where or how to mount your 65-inch TV.

  • If you’re mounting your television on drywall, it’s ideal that you mount the brackets to studs that are fitted inside the wall.
  • You shouldn’t use plastic wall anchors for mounting a 65-inch TV as they may not be able to withstand the weight of the television. However, if you must do so, make sure that the bracket is firmly mounted to the wall studs.
  • If you plan to use a full motion bracket, ensure that the wall is capable of withstanding the weight.
  • It’s preferable not to mount the television over a fireplace, especially if you opt for a manual pull-down mount.
  • Check if the TV bracket size matches that of the wall mount. Also, verify if the mounting bracket and wall can support the TV weight.

How High Should a 65-inch TV be Mounted?

As a general rule, for an increase in the size of the screen by 5 inches, the mounting height of the television goes up by 3 inches.

Ideally, a 65-inch television should be mounted at a height of 65 inches from the center of the TV to the floor and can go up to 69 inches. This is the preferred height if you plan to have the television in a large open space.

You might also want to consider the viewing distance. If this is between 7 and 16 feet, it may be better to mount the TV at a height that is a little above the eye-level so that you can experience the feel of a movie theater.

The eye level when sitting must be about one-third upwards from the bottom of the television. Some viewers opt to sit on the couch and measure the distance from their eyes to the floor to determine the ideal TV mounting height.

  • Some people have got their 65-inch TVs mounted at a height of 120cm or 130cm from the bottom of the TV to the floor. These people are often over 6 feet tall or tend to recline back in their seats when watching the television. Few people opt for just 67 to 70cm.
  • Some viewers prefer that the center of their television should be at the eye level for comfortable viewing. They don’t keep the TV at a higher level than this if they plan to view it from a sitting position as the elevation can cause them to sprain their neck.
  • The TV can be mounted at a slightly higher level than normal if it’s in a bedroom so that you can watch it comfortably when lying down on your bed.

How to mount a 65-inch TV on a drywall

You’ll need some basic tools to mount a 65-inch TV on drywall. These tools include the following:

  • Drill
  • TV bracket
  • Screws and Screwdriver
  • Leveler
  • Stud finder
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil

If you have a mount compatible for your TV, you must check if the drywall has studs behind it to screw the mount directly on them.

If not, you must use toggle bolts to hold the TV in place. The mounting can be done in three ways as described below.

Getting and planning the mount

  1. Get a mount that is compatible with your television and supports its weight. Decide if you want full-motion or set mounts based on where you plan to mount the TV.
  2. Screw the bracket of the mount into the holes at the rear of the television. Avoid screwing too much as the TV will get damaged.
  3. Choose the place for mounting the TV so that it’s at your eye level.
  4. Check if the wall has studs behind them using a stud finder. If you don’t have one, tap along the wall. A solid sound indicates that there is a stud behind.

Mounting your television on the studs

  1. Mark the studs at the height determined earlier for the optimal viewing angle using a pencil.
  2. Position the mount against the wall and mark the correct holes.
  3. Drill holes on the wall in the marks you made, using a drill.
  4. Screw the mount on to the wall.
  5. Place the TV bracket on the mount using the hooks on its rear.

Using toggle bolts for walls without studs

  1. Keep the TV mount on the wall and mark the exact position where you want the holes to be.
  2. Drill 0.25 inches (0.64cm) on the marks into the drywall.
  3. Slide toggle bolts of the above size into each hole.
  4. Push the bolt anchors inside the holes and remove the ends jutting out.
  5. Screw the mount into the above bolts.
  6. Hang the TV on to the mount using the hooks in the bracket.
